News America Marketing Selected as Featured Employer by AARP
Collaboration Offers More Opportunities for Older Workers
New York, NY (November 17, 2005) – News America Marketing, a division of News Corporation (NYSE: NWSA), today announced that it had been selected, along with 11 other companies, as a featured employer by the AARP, The American Association of Retired Persons. This distinction was earned by showing their commitment to hiring and retaining mature workers. The companies selected were subjected to an arduous approval process in competition with over 500 organizations.
“We have long believed that some of our most talented employees are our older workers. They take their jobs seriously and are able to manage challenges with perspective,” said Paul V. Carlucci, Chairman and CEO of News America Marketing.
Currently, over 47% of News America’s merchandising employees are mature workers. Carlucci believes that they are better able to use their past work experience to establish credibility and get results.
“We get tremendous benefits from our older workers, and they enjoy the flexibility and independence of working part-time as members of our field force,” said Rita Meyer, EVP, Human Resources, News America Marketing.
Featured employers enjoy the credibility and prestige of being affiliated with the AARP, the non-profit, non-partisan membership organization that is dedicated to helping people who are 50 and over lead better lives.
A specific benefit of being a featured employer of the AARP is having a link on their website, www.aarp.org, for members to submit resumes. One of the AARP’s existing Featured Employers, The Home Depot, received 50,000 resumes in the first weekend after becoming aligned with the program in 2004. Since then, they have received over 1 million hits to their recruiting website.
“Obviously, the connection with the AARP is a tremendous boon to our recruiting efforts, “said Gene Klein, COO, News America Marketing. “With over 3000 positions to fill this year, across the country, we are going to have unprecedented access to a talented, experienced applicant pool, which translates to a significant competitive advantage.”
The AARP is likewise pleased with the relationship with their featured employers. “We are working with forward-thinking companies who value older workers to offset labor and knowledge gaps. This is a winning strategy for American business, for the older workers themselves and for our national economy,” said AARP CEO Bill Novelli.
AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization that helps people 50+ have independence, choice and control in ways that are beneficial and affordable to them and society as a whole. They produce AARP The Magazine, published bimonthly; AARP Bulletin, their monthly newspaper; AARP Segunda Juventud, their bimonthly magazine in Spanish and English; NRTA Live & Learn, their quarterly newsletter for 50+ educators; and their website, www.aarp.org. AARP Foundation is an affiliated charity that provides security, protection, and empowerment to older persons in need with support from thousands of volunteers, donors, and sponsors.
