Energy Initiative
Becoming Carbon Neutral
Climate change is perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. As part of News Corporation, we are committed to addressing our impact on the environment and reducing our energy use and carbon emissions. Our goal is carbon neutrality, or zero carbon emissions, by the year 2010.
Carbon Footprint Analysis
News Corporation began its efforts to reduce carbon emissions by conducting a Carbon Footprint Analysis for each business unit. In FY’07, News America Marketing’s carbon footprint totaled 25,635 tons. We are proud to be able to say that News America Marketing led all News Corporation divisions by reducing our carbon footprint by 25% from fiscal year 2006 to fiscal year 2007.
Strategy
News Corporation has laid out a strategy for achieving carbon neutrality. That strategy includes three parts:
Step 1: Reducing our energy use
Step 2: Using renewable energy sources whenever possible
Step 3: Offsetting unavoidable emissions
Initiatives
We have implemented the following energy-saving measures:
- Improving management of our Field automobile fleet, implementing routing software and redesigning managed merchandising programs to reduce emissions and fuel
- Introducing hybrid vehicles into our Field automobile fleet
- Changing materials for several of our In-Store programs from vinyl to recyclable cardboard
- Moving to a frameless Shelftalk unit which uses less plastic hardware than our original Shelftalk, which used a red plastic frame
- Placing recycling bins in every cube and office
